The latest outrage is the report that thirty (30!) children were recently born using a technique which involves 3 parents. The researchers call their experiment "the first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy children." Quoting the article: A number of scientists question the ethics of the experiment. For the first time, they say, it has been confirmed that children have been born with genetic alterations. Scary stuff.

"Scientists" have once again gotten so far into the trees that they entirely missed the forest, and have proved that they are not the appropriate gate-keepers for what is on- and off-limits.

Isolated in their labs, they continue to tinker with global-apocalyptic-capable technology with the reckless abandon of children with Lego.

"Let's try this!" "Let's try that!"

With so many hands at the work, how long can it be before we destroy ourselves?

Self-organizing, self-directed robots? Robots whose singular purpose is to take things around them and convert them into other things? Maybe that doesn't sound bad to you. But wait. Have you ever heard of the Paperclip Maximizer? It's a thought experiment, where an Artificial Intelligence is given an instruction, a purpose. Collect paperclips.

That one little spark leads to the development of a passion, an obsession, with paperclips...and an outburst of ability on the part of the AI, leading ultimately to the entire universe being converted into paperclips. It's a thought experiment. So think about it.

I don't want to be an alarmist or anything, but do scientists view all experiments as benign? Doesn't there come a time when they should examine the potential for harm in an exploratory direction and question how much progress should be made?

I'm not saying this one is it, but once the cat's out of the bag, it's hard to contain. What I AM saying is, let's think things through. There are already several (30?) genetically modified human children out there. Just because we CAN do something doesn't address whether we SHOULD.

Hulu Movies / IMDB mash-up

Flash: This just in!

I have removed the rankings, period. There isn't much point, since Hulu has made their Advanced Search ( http://www.hulu.com/popular/feature_films?h=19&has_free=1&timeframe=this_month&has_captions=0) provide all the online movies they have, with a dropdown menu for sorting. Just what they were missing two years ago. Thanks to anyone who came by. I hope you'll have a poke about and see the other stuff I linked to.

BTW, Hulu has really bad movies right now. Hope they improve. When the most popular movie is some comedy I never heard of called "Strictly Sexual" (why do people keep trying to watch it?) it has officially become a vast wasteland. Goodbye Hulu Movies, you had a nice run, but stick to television. It's what you do well.

PS. Since posting, I have watched The Professional (aka. "Leon") - the best movie on Hulu. It was GREAT! Jean Reno is this AWESOME Batman-like asassin, a lone killer with a moral code, who can take on large groups with silent efficiency. Very good job. Natalie Portman was alright as the kid.

But...

Gary Oldman. Wow. He is muy bueno as the bad guy, channeling Brad Pitt in Kalifornia and 12 Monkeys - like a real crazy Early or something. Just Plain-Ass Crazy.

A good watch, for a movie I had never heard of.

Okay, but another "origin" story? Really DC? Is that the way to go?

Anyone else tired of the origin stories? Let's just start with the superhero, in existence and doing his/her thing. Let's have a comic-book story, with everyone in costume from the beginning to the end, no "human interest" rubbish. That's the way it's done.

Hollywood, are you listening? How about you, DC?

Crazy about Linux

I don't have a computer that doesn't have Linux installed on it. That's how I am. That's how lots of people are. It's fun, it's free, and it's legal. We indulge.

However, there are limits. This is a jokey way of telling us that. You could install Linux on an iPhone. On TiVo (actually, it's already there). Or an Xbox.

Or you could install it on a Dead Badger. Like the animal. Detailed instructions

By the way, if you want to "do" Linux, I highly recommend PCLinuxOS.

Disney Recycle?

Okay, this is really eye-opening! I had NO IDEA that disney re-used their scenes, frame by frame. I knew that Kaa was in Jungle Book and Robin Hood, as was Baloo, but I mean, well, gee...

Just watch this, okay? You will FREAK OUT! Promise.

The creepy music doesn't help with the whole 'not-freaking-out' thing.
